Her life is almost like the famous cliché, “from rags to riches”. Mariah Carey started from the scratch. Unlike many popular divas nowadays, she is not a daughter of famous people in this industry.

She was born on March 27, 1970, near Long Island New York to Alfred and Patricia Carey. She has a brother named Morgan and a sister named Alison of whom she is the youngest. Alfred is of Venezuelan-African- American blood, and Patricia is an Irish. When Mariah was three years old, her parents separated due to racial difference. Patricia, who is an opera singer and a voice coach, raised Mariah. Just then, Mariah was beginning to learn singing. She and her mother did not have permanent address then because of financial difficulty.

Mariah showed interest in music at a very young age. When she was a child, she used to sing to his brother’s radio. She also used to sing for her brother’s band. She can sing two octaves above an average soprano. She traded off school with singing. She claims that she was not really much of a student in Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York where she attended high school. Her schoolmates call her “Mirage” for she was often late because of recording early morning in a borrowed studio. Not long after finishing high school, Mariah has set her foot in New York along with a friend. They were almost broke and had to share a single mattress on the floor of a grimy apartment when they need to rest.

Like anybody else, Mariah worked in different jobs just to get by. She even became a hat/coat checker, a hostess, and a helper in hair salons. Then she became a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr. In one of the affairs that she attended with Starrr, she bumped into great fortune. Her demo tape landed on the hands of Tommy Mottola of CBS Records then. He made Mariah sign a contract not long after that.

Mariah’s career rapidly boomed. Since she signed a contract with CBS, both her singles and albums soared in music bars and hit the top of radio station across countries. Her albums reached platinum sales. She also snagged Grammy awards and many other achievements that belong to superb divas. Her whirlwind success is still soaring up high in the next years to come.
