| Lisa Kudrow is probably best recognized as the wacky “friend” Phoebe
Buffay, ditzy New Age musician/masseuse/taxi driver and creator of the song,
“Smelly Cat.” Ms. Kudrow was born on July 30, 1963 in Encino, California to
dad, Lee, a renowned headache specialist, and mom, Nedra, a travel agent.
Although a persistent and studious student, Ms. Kudrow has shown an interest in acting in an early age by lip synching to the soundtrack of “Fiddler on the Roof.” After finishing high school from William Howard Taft in 1981, she attended Vassar College in New York where she took up Biology, with hopes of pursuing a career in medical research afterwards. The acting bug bit when Jon Lovitz, a friend of Lisa's brother's, had just been cast on “Saturday Night Live.” Lovitz encouraged Lisa to audition for the improvisational-comedy troupe the Groundlings; she became an official member in 1989. Because of her experience and recognition as a comedienne, she was cast in a role in a production called, “The Ladies Room.” Later on, she moved on to television with appearances on “Cheers” (1982), “Newhart” (1982), “Coach” (1989), “Life Goes On” (1989), and “The Simpsons” (1989). What led her to her Emmy award-winning role as Phoebe on NBC’s long-running hit sitcom, “Friends” was her stint as the ditzy waitress, Ursula, on NBC’s “Mad About You.” Phoebe was actually the twin sister of Ursula’s character. Her resume expanded with additions like “Romy and Michele's High School Reunion” (1997), “Clockwatchers” (1997), “The Opposite of Sex” (1998), “Analyze This” (1999), co-starring Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal, its sequel “Analyze That” (2002), “Hanging Up” (2000), also starring the beautiful Meg Ryan, and “Lucky Numbers” (2000) opposite John Travolta. Ms. Kudrow has earned numerous recognitions for her role as Phoebe on “Friends” including an Emmy nomination as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her work during the series’ debut season, and later an Actor's Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. This goes to show that she is not someone to typecast as the flaky, and oftentimes neurotic, Phoebe Buffay. With fellow (and equally beautiful) “Friends” cast mates, she did a high profile milk print ad as well as the infamous Diet Coke campaign. With the conclusion of “Friends” on its 10th season, Ms. Kudrow is currently enjoying the company of her French husband, Michael Stern and her son, Julian Murray. |
