| "Mainly I write to clarify my thoughts and feelings and when I sing, I
just concentrate on getting my point across. I just want to make a statement
and make it right." Straight - there could not be any other portrayal that could encapsulate Fiona Apple’s (Fiona Apple Maggart in real life) persona than this one whenever, wherever and whatever she does in her life. Born on September 13, 1977 in New York, USA, Fiona Apple was cultured with the jazz principles by her mother and was familiarized to the Beatles by her stepfather. As early as the age of 11, Fiona was already writing her own songs that also served as an outlet for all of her frustrations, lack of confidence, coyness, and later at age 12 a rape ordeal. She was sent to a therapy because of acting differently from the rest of the children and was called "dog of the school," crazy, weird, stupid that it made her miss her class for consecutive weeks. Swapping school, her principal told her she was emotionally disturbed which she admitted, she was. At age 16, her mind was fixed on moving to LA where her father lived and there she finished a demo consisting of three of her written and composed songs which she had it reproduced (78 copies). Fiona’s greatest influence came from Maya Angelou, also a singer songwriter and more. The first copy she distributed landed just to the right person Andy Slater, owner of Clean State Records. After two years of writing and recording, Fiona found herself releasing her first debut album Tidal in July of 1996 that really made a tidal wave of responses and her singles like “Shadowboxer” secured abuzzed reviews and was playlisted on various Top 40 radio stations. It also made a comparison with other notable female singers like Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos and P.J. Harvey. No wonder she won the Best New Artist award on the 1997 MTV Awards. On the soaring success of Tidal, Fiona says, “I didn't want to gauge myself by anything I was hearing or reading. I didn't want to get stuck in mirrors - I wanted to carry on." Fiona also won a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance ("Criminal") and was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song ("Criminal") in February 1998. Her follow-up album titled “When The Pawn Hits The Conflicts He Thinks Like A King What He Knows Throws The Blows When He Goes To The Ring There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand And Remember That Depth Is The Greatest of Heights And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where To Land And If You Fall It Won't Matter, 'Cuz You'll Know That You're Right,” was another original, impressionistic hit that that revealed a lot more, uninhibited and confident Fiona. |
