| With an all-natural beauty, Ashanti (Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas – in real
life), is a bona fide singer song-writer extraordinaire. Born in Glen Cove,
New York, Ashanti had her first taste of singing on-stage at age-six in a
gospel choir. She answered the calling of singing R&B at a talent show performance in 1994. At this moment of her life, her powerful, moving voice disturbed the people within the bounds of the industry. Not even clouded by uncertainties, Ashanti signed on with a team of management and her show went on. Her brilliant voice was heard at the Madison Square, Garden, China Club, Soul Cafe, Greek Fest 2000 at Jones Beach and at the Caroline’s Comedy Club, well, to name a few. Among the famous, influential singers who she considered as inspiration for her are Elle Fitzgerald, Mary J Blige and Blue Magic. She also collaborated performances with Fat Joe, Big Pun ‘s How We Roll from his Endangered Species CD, and Ja Rule’s Always on Time single where in she also comes in to view with him on Making the Video of MTV (Music Television) and on his platinum CD Pain Is Love. Significantly, she was the first R&B to bond with Murder, Inc. Records. While in AJM Records, Irv Gotti, a Murder, Inc. Records multi-platinum producer and hitmaker, was stunned by her extraordinary voice and song writing and helped her paved the way to the bigger stage of melody and music. She worked with recording artist Cadillac Tah on his singles POV City Anthem and Thug Love. On her first self-titled debut album, Ashanti wrote a massive total of twelve cuts and to name a few are "Foolish", "Always On Time", and "What's Luv" - which made it to the top 10 and take note: all at once. “Always on Time” hit an astounding number 1 during the early year 2002 in Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In addition to this, her debut album in one week time alone sold an amazing 500,000plus copies thus claiming a soaring number one on the album chart. Her solo track titled “When a Man Does Wrong” and faceted on the remake of Madonna’s “Justify My Love” on the soundtrack of the Vin Diesel movie The Fast and the Furious with rapper Vita. As an actress, her credit include roles in Who's da Man and Spike Lee's Malcolm X. Going beyond the recording studio, Ashanti is having dance schooling at the Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center and have performed with the Senior Pro Ensemble at Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Apollo Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Black Spectrum Theater. Her dance prestige includes Disney’s TV musical “Polly” which was directed by Debbie Allen where it starred Phylicia Rashad, collaboration with Judith Jamison of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and the 1994 Caribbean Awards. By the way, Ashanti is also writing singles for Christina Millan and Jennifer Lopez. |
