A five nominations for American Music Awards attest that this Manhattan-raised R&B and hip-hop artist really deserves a space in the music industry. I’m talking about nothing but Alicia Keys.

Born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1981 in Manhattan New York, her musical talent began to show at an early age of 5 and took piano lessons, developing her voice range singing and also penned her own songs at the age of 12.

Though getting serious with her ability, Alicia was able to manage her schooling where she had graduated high school with high grades at age 16. Started at Columbia University but later left to give way for her long time desire in music.

Her musical influences can be attributed to Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, and even Beethoven. Classically trained pianist, her music also features a classical touch with fusion of jazz, blues, hip-hop and R&B.-hop.
In 1999, Alicia went signed with Clive Davis at J Records where she was able to release her debut album “Songs in A Minor.” She was just 19 at that time. The release received raving acceptance among listeners and critics even calling her Roberta Flack, with an edge in hip-hop and even reached the number one spot on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. The success of the album can be attributed to her first single Fallin’ which became a radio play lists fave.
Because of raging acceptance, she was nominated in both the pop and R&B categories as favorite female artist and favorite new artist and then later named as one of People Magazine's "Breakthrough Stars of 2001".
Her unquestionable beauty made her appear in magazines like Vibe (cover), Vanity Fair music issue, SevenTeen Magazine and Teen Magazine.
