| Her mother definitely was the first to recognize her voice so she
excitedly signed her for a pre-schooler vocal lesson and countess auditions.
Because of such powerful voice exhibited by little Aaliyah, she always had a
singing part during plays and not feared by the big world, this
Brooklyn-born, Detroit-raised Aaliyah entered the screen through Star Search
which brought her to a singing career opposite Gladys Knight just after two
years. Perhaps, Aaliyah’s break in the music industry can be accounted to her Uncle, then CEO of an artistic management company when she was introduced to singer songwriter R. Kelly. Only at age 14, Aaliyah was applauded when she did her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number that became a platinum-seller. It featured 2 gold singles written by R.Kelly - Back & Forth and At Your Best (You Are Love) - both obtaining a meteoric success. This lead to series of world tours invading European, Far East, African and North American countries. Just a few months later, rumors arise that Aaliyah married R. Kelly which neither of them admitted. With a proven upbeat prowess on singing and exhibiting an modern rhythm and blues style, her career boomed with more movie soundtrack and video contracts coming like Low Down Dirty Shame, All That, and Sunset Park. She had a major hit in her song Are You That Somebody? from Dr. Dolittle where she also had a small part in the movie itself. Her Journey to the Past which was featured in Anastasia was nominated for an Oscar. The Queen of the Damned where she played a big part became a success after its release in 2002, topping the box office just after one week. With a more mature Aaliyah - this was her next album One in a Million in 1996 expressed that became double platinum. She have a gone miles away from where she started, collaborating with various notable producers like Timbaland, who co-wrote numerous tracks with his songwriting cohort and Missy Elliott. "If Your Girl Only Knew," "One in a Million," "4 Page Letter" – were the singles that became hits, with "If Your Girl Only Knew" unbelievably reaching to the top of the R&B charts. The ballad song "The One I Gave My Heart To" which was written Diane Warren also climbed the Top 10 R&B chart. Things come when we least expect them. About a month following One in a
Million’s release, Aaliyah flew to Bahamas for a video shooting for her
second single "Rock the Boat.” Members of the crew on board the small
twin-engine Cessna plane returning to the mainland was not able to survived
